"From Scratch"

"Curious George Flies a Kite" is a Curious George episode from season 1. In this episode, one gusty morning at the country house leads George to experiment with aerodynamics. In the wind, birds soar, ping-pong balls roll, and bricks don't move at all. But the best thing of all for a windy day is a kite. George, with the not-so-willing assistance of Jumpy Squirrel, discovers the wonders and perils of kite flying.

Synopsis[]

George wakes up in The Man with the Yellow Hat's country house to the sound of wind. He starts wondering what can fly and what can't. He heads downstairs, talking to The Man and promising not to take his yellow hat before going outside to test his lucky brick, paper cups, ping-pong balls, napkins and paper clips, all of which blow away but the brick.

Jumpy Squirrel comes down from a tree and digs up an acorn, but just before he starts eating it, George's stuff flies at him. He dodges it and flees up into the tree. Meanwhile, George sees some geese flying in the sky and imagine flying with them. He lets go of his lucky brick, hoping it'll fly too; instead, it crashes to the ground because it's too heavy, much to George's disappointment. He images himself flying, then turning into a brick and falling. Suddenly, he sees a yellow kite and decides to go investigate.

George finds Bill flying it and wants to fly it too, but Bill says no, that it'll be too difficult for him. As Bill is distracted talking to George, the wind blows his kite in a different direction. Bill tries to pull it back but gets pulled by it instead. The kite lands in a tree, startling a sleeping Jumpy. Bill is upset his kite may never come down, so George climbs up the tree and gets it down himself. Bill, relieved his kite doesn't have a scratch, rewards George by letting him fly it. This makes George excited, but Bill's mom calls him. Bill has to leave but tells George he can watch the kite.

With Bill gone, George tries to get the kite to fly by tossing it forwards which doesn't work. He tries running while holding it up and then tossing it forward which does work. Excited that he's flying the kite for the first time, George continues running while holding the kite's string with his finger only for it to unwind from its spool. The kite starts flying away, and George manages to catch it only to have it blown out of his hands by the wind.

George gives chase as the kite approaches Mrs. Renkins riding a horse. She tries catching it but misses, so George jumps on top of her hat but falls. The kite flies to the top of the barn and gets tangled around the weathervane. George goes up to get it via the hay-loading bucket, untangling the string. Mrs. Renkins tells him to tie it around something so he doesn't lose it again. George, seeing that Mrs. Renkins tied her horse to a hitching post, ties the kite string around his wrist. He proudly walks forward but the kite pulls him back. He fights with it by trying to move forward, eventually stepping off the barn's roof and finding himself floating midair. To make matters worse, the wind blows the kite and George into the sky.

George crashes into a tree that Jumpy is in. Jumpy scolds George, but George begs him to untie the kite from his wrist. Jumpy tries, but the wind blows the kite away again, lifting George and Jumpy with it. They almost crash into a windmill but miss it. Then, they fly over a pond where Mr. Quint is fishing while Mrs. Quint knits, the two noticing George but ignoring it. George and Jumpy fly into a flock of geese much to George's delight as his dream from earlier comes true: flying with birds. After that, George finds his arm growing sore and wants to go home but doesn't know how to.

Back on the ground, Bill notices his kite is missing. He looks into the sky and sees George attached to his runaway kite. He races to The Man's house and tells him to look up with binoculars. The Man does and sees George trailing behind a kite with a squirrel on his head. He tells Bill to call the fire department and hurriedly goes after George.

George finds the world below beautiful but is no longer sure which way is home. Plus, Jumpy is hungry. They fly through puffy clouds, and see The Man flying toward them on a hang glider, calling George's name. George and The Man try grabbing each other's arm, but they miss. The kite starts diving and rising, causing George and Jumpy to scream. On his second attempt, The Man grabs George by the waist, and they head home.

At the country house, Bill and George are flying their own kites. The Man grills hamburgers for lunch and gives acorns to Jumpy. George and Bill pull their kites down, revealing George's kite is smaller so it's safer and easier to fly. Seeing this confuses Bill, and the episode ends.
